Sport: Cricket Coaching Clinic with Marcus Trescothick and Pete Sanderson

On Wednesday we welcomed two cricketing legends to Sandroyd.

Pete Sanderson is director of cricket at Taunton School.  He is currently first team analyst and coach at Somerset County Cricket Club and has worked with many top cricketers over the years. Mr Sanderson is a Level 4 coach and also coaches the Somerset Cricket Club Academy Structure.

Mr Sanderson was joined by Somerset CCC and former England opener, Marcus Trescothick, who is head of cricket development at Taunton School.  Marcus reached the pinnacle of his glittering international cricket career to date in 2005 by opening the batting in all five Test Matches and helping England to regain the Ashes. He averaged over 40 in the series and ended it ranked eighth in the list of the world’s top batsmen. He has captained his country and played in 123 One-Day Internationals and 76 Test matches between 2000 and 2006.

Year 5 & 6 took part in a cricket master class which focused on batting, bowling and catching drills.  A number of children were awarded top batter and bowler of the day.  Congratulations to Ivan R, Sam I, Kitty P, Will R & Alice A-D who showed huge development in their skills.  Following the masterclass, Marcus & Pete took part in a Q&A session with Year 7 & our Year 8 sports scholars.  Both our guests commented on how insightful the children’s questions were.  Guy was awarded a signed cricket ball for his question to Marcus - he asked “how did you cope with nerves?”  Marcus stated he always felt anxious in every game but he learned to deal with the nerves by seeing them as a positive part of his game, rather than a negative.

Well done to all the children and thank you again to our guests Pete Sanderson & Marcus Trescothick for giving up their time to work with our budding Sandroydian cricket stars.
