Skills Week: Year 7 French Trip
Mardi
Bonjour de Normandie.
This morning we headed to the Marché in Le Tréport, a coastal town.
The children were given Euros by our Animateur to buy food for a « pique-nique ». Plenty of French was practiced to buy lovely fruit, salads, charcuterie (pâté de lapin, anyone?) and delicious « fromages ». Miam! Miam!
This afternoon, we headed for a farm, La Vache de Louvicamp. The children found out about cows and calves and how milk is produced. All in French of course! We were so impressed with how much the students understood and how well they engaged with the farmer. After a go at milking cows, they were served a little collation and purchased the produce from the farm, using their French skills again. A lot of wholesome fun!
Mercredi
Today, after filling up with croissants, chocolats chauds and fresh fruits and yogurt, we boarded our coach to go to various sites commemorating The Battle of the Somme. First stop, Musée 1914. The children were fascinated by all the objects found on the old battlefields or donated by the families of the soldiers who fought. Next, Thiepval, where, after exploring the interactive exhibits, we were treated to a very knowledgeable introduction to the memorial by one of our in-house historians, Xander. We managed to find two fallen Old Sandroydians’ names inscribed in the stone and held a minute of silence. The children were exemplary throughout this giant history lesson of a day. This evening we headed to the château for a well-earned supper, followed by some well-deserved chilling out “à la plage” by popular demand. A demain!
Jeudi
Today is the last day of our action packed stay in Normandy.
After wake up, “inspection des chambres” and petit déjeuner, we headed for Rouen, to wander round the picturesque Old town and admire the majestic cathedral, as painted by Monet in the famous series of paintings. After a spot of shopping, the children had the opportunity to try “macarons”.
We then headed for a “boulangerie”, where the children had a hands on experience making baguettes and croissants. The “boulanger” was very passionate about his trade and even told us “baguettes” were one of the wonders of the world. After their hard work, our budding bakers got to savour some delicious mini pains aux raisins and everyone walked out with their own baguette and croissant!
We are now off to a “supermarché” to buy our last goodies.
