Sandroyd School

National Poetry Day

National Poetry Day

On Thursday, all the children at Sandroyd took part in National Poetry Day. During the build-up of the day, Poetry had been very much the focus in English lessons. Over the course of the day, there were recitations throughout the school – in class, in the grounds at breaktime, at the end of breakfast, lunch and supper and also in the dormitories. The poets chosen ranged from Spike Milligan to Shakespeare; Michael Rosen to Roald Dahl; Thomas Hardy to Wilfred Owen; Robert Frost to Dylan Thomas. There were also several poems written by the children themselves, and even one in Spanish! We finished the evening with 'The Song of the Witches' from Macbeth, which seems to have become a Sandroyd tradition. All the recitations, without exception, were brilliantly delivered; huge thanks to all those who took part, and also to the English teaching staff for preparing them so well.
